Math Menu Course
Math Menu Course
Math Menu: A Framework for Meaningful Instruction and Differentiation: Meeting the Needs of All K-8 Students
Appropriate for Early Educators, Primary and Elementary level as well as Special Educators
This 3-credit graduate course, sponsored by the All Learners Network, focuses on building teacher pedagogical knowledge about effective practices for mathematics teaching and learning. Teachers will focus on a main lesson/menu as an effective practice for differentiating and enhancing mathematics instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
We will explore a main lesson/menu model for math instruction (occasionally referred to as math workshop). In this model, during the main lesson, students work together in heterogeneous groups to solve rich problem-solving tasks. During the menu component, students work in small groups or independently on tasks targeted to their specific needs.
Teachers will learn how to: 1) build a classroom culture where all students learn to feel mathematically competent, 2) choose or adapt rich mathematical tasks for main lesson, and 3) support students to work productively in small groups. Also, learn to manage a ‘centers’ approach for menu, which will allow you to meet with small groups of students and individual students while other students work independently. The course is hosted by BRSU.
